“The Sound of the Trio”- June 11
San Antonio, April 10, 2013 – Brent Watkins is a pianist, arranger, and band-leader in San Antonio and one of the foremost visionaries on the city’s live music scene. This June the local favorite brings an all-star trio to the Charlene McCombs Empire Theater for a full length concert, “The Sound of the Trio: A Tribute to Oscar Peterson.”
A veteran of the concert stage, Watkins made his Carnegie Hall debut in 2001 and has since performed both classical and jazz concerts around the globe. The June 11 concert is dedicated to the legacy of 20th century Jazz legend, Oscar Peterson.
In 2009 Watkins founded South Texas Jazz with local crooner Jonathan Card, and since then has taken the San Antonio Jazz scene by storm. The South Texas Jazz Quartet can was voted best jazz band of 2012 by the SA Current, and plays a steady circuit of San Antonio venues.
Tyler Jackson and Dean Macomber complete the trio on upright bass and drums, respectively. Heavyweights in their own right, Jackson tours with Ray Price and has played venues ranging from the Grand Ole Opry to Radio City Music Hall. Macomber, whose versatility knows no bounds, brings a wealth of studio and touring experience to the group, as well as substantial stage time. Macomber was the winner of the prestigious “Best Unsigned Drummer in the Nation” competition sponsored by Modern Drummer Magazine.
Around San Antonio, Watkins, Jackson, and Macomber are known for the irreverent and buoyant style, as much as for their incomparable talent. Laughter, improvisation, and intoxicating groove draw audiences into the world of romance and nostalgia, with not a little innovation.
Expect nothing short of top notch jazz and a rollicking good time, as the Brent Watkins Trio treats audiences to a night of jazz as it was meant to be played.
